Title: To Stumble Upon a Dream
Background: Eh, an assignment. I had a little too much fun with it, though. Just a little short story--yet again. Enjoy~~
Work:
As I walk down the street, I feel overwhelmed and flabbergasted. I had gone through the humdrum of the day, and then came home to find a lollapalooza. I had stormed out of the house as soon as I’d heard it. It was horrible, untrue. I would never believe it, not in a million years. They’d told me lies before, lies for my health they had said later, but this was just a little too over the top.
“Balder-dash!!” I had yelled at them, “It isn’t so! Lies!” and I had run out of the house, slightly like a juggernaut on my way out. No one was going to stop me, because I had to go. I had to see it for myself. I ran to the end of town, taking the back roads and seeing a few bushwhackers along the way. I continued furiously down the familiar path blindly, not paying attention to where I was going exactly. Memories of my close friends and me as rambunctious children running around here flooded my brain. Tears pricked at my eyes as I continued to stumble down the trail, eventually walking into the forest. There were few who lived around this part, only a couple were brave enough to.
In the last few years, people had started to disappear around here. No one knew who or why, but we all had our suspicions. You know, the town flibbertigibbets making up stories and tales about how the people and children possibly could have gone. Personally, I think they decided to leave. I mean, who would want to live here anyway? It’s so boring and small in our little town, everyone knows each other and gossip spreads so quickly it’s like a wild fire.
My foot caught on something, and I tripped and fell, face first. The whole forest seemed to be bamboozling me, making me fall and stumble upon everything in my anger. I got up, glaring at the tree root that had tripped me, and brushed myself off. I realized I was in the wrong place, as I looked around. I hadn’t put much attention into where I had been going after the memories had flooded my mind, making my previous thoughts hazy. So now I was lost, and my family was probably freaking out about where I was.
In the distance, I heard a long caterwaul, and I froze. The sunset was ending, and I didn’t have anything but my phone, which I’m sure, had no service out here. The phone wouldn’t provide me much light, but it was better than nothing. I dilly-dallied where I was, playing with my phone; trying to find service. My attention was taken away as a roly-poly shaped thing came out from the brush. I watched it as it took a few steps, glanced at me lackadaisically, and then trotted back into the forest. My heart thumped loudly as I stood there, staring at the now empty space the bugaboo had occupied.
I was sure I had never seen something like that, not even on television or anything. What was it? I didn’t dare go after it; it could be some rare poisonous creature that only the best scientists know of. No, I thought to myself. My gut told me that nobody knew about that creature; it told me that I should be very, very fearful; it told me I should run. It can’t be, this must be a shenanigan, I thought, a trick, yes that’s it. I looked around me frantically, and decided to head back the way I had come. But something caught my eye, and I turned towards it, drawn in.
I walked off the old path, pushing away the clawing branches of the cruel trees that surrounded me. All I wanted was to get to the thing that I had seen. That’s the one thing my mind could focus on. I staggered over logs and through weeds, and eventually found myself before a small lake with a waterfall. The waterfall was silent as it fell gracefully into the blue-green water of the lake. My phone dropped out of my hand and into the soft grass beneath my feet as I walked toward the beautiful scene before me.
I was drawn to the lake; pulled to it by some unseen force. I ambled into the lake, my aim the waterfall. As I continued to wade through the water, I hear my phone ringing. How would I even get service here? I thought vaguely. I dismissed the thought and went on my way through the water.
I was so close to the water fall that I could practically touch it. And I did. I even walked through it, smiling; joy overcoming my senses. I splashed around in the wondrous water, enjoying every drop of it that landed on my skin. I looked up, not thinking, and saw a tunnel cut through the rock in front of me. How peculiar… I thought and walked toward it. I pulled myself out of the water and into the cave. My thoughts are coming back to me, my senses are mine again; not clouded by whatever it was that had pulled my to where ever I was now.
I stared down the tunnel, confused. How could this even be here? How could the rock just be cut right out like that? It looked as though something had just carved an arch in the rock and pulled it right out, to create the tunnel I was now in. I slowly walked through the tunnel, curious to see where it led to. I saw a little light at the end, and ran toward it.
As I ran through the tunnel, all of the past events of the night rushed through my head, and it seemed as though my family had pulled a deep skullduggery me. I shook my head and those thoughts scattered.
I had found the source of the light, but I couldn’t see what it was; Just the light itself. I walked forward, reaching out my hand, attempting to touch the weird substance. I walked forward into the light, and was astounded at what stood before me. But before I could even get to that in my thought process, I looked behind me, to make sure I had a way home, but the only thing I found was a giant, vine covered wall.
